Super Mario RPG

Super Mario is a fun series. I’ll just pretend this isn’t a part of it.

Information:

  • Review Date: July 3, 2021
  • Release Date: May 13, 1996
  • Platform: SNES
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Square
  • Genre: RPG

Description: Remember the plot from the platformers? It’s exactly the same.

Positives: I’m actually impressed that they found a way to turn a series of platformers into an RPG. They took a good amount of the enemies, plus Mario and friends, and gave them all a complete set of statistics to work with.

Negatives: Where do I begin?

  • The plot is just the same old crap, but placed into a new genre.
  • The fast pace of the platformers is utterly destroyed here, turning Super Mario into a slow mess full of grinding.

Screenshots:

At this point, I’m not even going to question why Bowser went after Toadstool again or why they’re on top of chandeliers.
Everyone is a comedian. Let’s all just hang out together.
OK, it’s awesome to see a warp pipe as a chimney.
Even though it’s an RPG, Mario can still jump and there are goodies inside ? blocks.
Instead of telling the story, Mario acts it out. Seriously.
Mallow better not be putting frogs in boxes!

My Progress: Level 3, Bandit’s Way, wasted a lot of time chasing down a crocodile

Final Opinion: I just wasted a ton of time following around a crocodile only to get quickly worked over by it once the fight started. I certainly hope the game gets better after this, but I’m not sticking around to find out.

Grade: D
