Anecdotes: Excitebike had a sequel?!?!? Why have I never heard of it?

Description: This is the classic Excitebike game updated for the technology of 2000. It’s dirt bike racing at its finest.

Positives:

  • First off, there are six racers to choose from. Whether or not the racer affects gameplay, I don’t know. As an added touch, players can also choose the racer’s outfit color as well as the color of the bike.
  • Due to the technology, the tracks on the first game didn’t look realistic and they didn’t have turns. Here, the tracks really look like dirt. Some are in arenas; some are outside. Outside of a portion of the awesome Lefty’s Mill track, everything I saw was on dirt.
  • Another improvement is that racers no longer have to waste time running back to their bikes. Sarah crashed and crashed a lot. Every time she did, she was instantly placed back on the track and able to restart immediately. It’s not realistic, but it certainly helps make the gameplay more fun.

Negatives:

  • A lot of Sarah’s crashes were due to me not having full control of the turns. It’s two things: starting turns too late and not braking. There will be a lot of cases of jumping over a barrier, too.

Screenshots:

Superman? Come on. We all know Superman is from Metropolis, IL.
I’m going to be Sarah. She’s getting a red outfit and a blue bike.
I’m just racing around in a quarry, which is kind of shaped like a T-Shirt.
Is this enough for the “ice and snow” tag? I’m thinking not.
That speed limit sign is hilarious.
Hey, that’s a good looking stop sign! It’s too bad Sarah’s about to crash, though.
Are they sure it was me? My bike was blue.
I rode right past a fire, then just quit and explored the desert.

My Progress: Forced retirement due to bad performance

Final Opinion: This was fun. It improves on the original in every meaningful way.

Grade: B
